Texas Painted Churches

First of all, thank y'all for the numerous expressions of love and prayers on our behalf as we initiated our travels.   As  promised here is a rundown of selected photos of five churches in and around Schulenburg, TX. that we visited with our dear friends Dave and Donna Sommers last week.

The following churches were established by German, Czech and Swiss Christian immigrants to Texas.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Dubina, TX.  This was founded in 1877 by the first Czech settlement in Texas.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church founded in 1890 in Ammonsville, TX

United Evangelical Lutheran Church and Cemetery

Freyburg United Methodist Church - 1879

St. Mary Roman Catholic Church - 1860

I asked Linda what she felt as she visited these churches.  She thought and said "reverence and awe".  It is not that any of these hand carved wooden painted statues are to worshipped but rather that one is drawn to experience great awe for the God who bestowed upon His people the gift of artistry and skill to create such awe inspiring art.  Its draws one closer to God.

We sincerely hope that any of you in Texas would take the time to visit and admire these relgious works of art.

From here we made our way to Mary Esther, FL and Miramar Beach, FL to spend time with Linda's brother Gary and his girl friend Nancy as well as my brother Mike and sister-in-law Marna,  There is no evidence here of Hurricane Elsa which is impacting other parts of Florida.

We passed out another New Testament today.

The white-sugary sand beaches of the gulf coast here are phenomenal.  Pictures tomorrow.

  1. Beautiful!! These photos remind me of the churches we saw when we lived in Germany. I agree with Linda about the awe and reverence they inspire.

  3. So nice to hear from you and see the amazing churches. We just got home from a complete family reunion of all that live in Kelowna of the area. Our grandson and wife came home from Alberta for the weekend. There were 14 of us. It has been so hot here with over 200 fires in our province from lightning. Today was lovely at the park near the beach. We shared, talked, ate and played games and laughed. How wonderful it was. Some we haven't seen since Covid. We are doing well and thanking God for so many blessings. We enjoy our home. We stayed home all during Covid and that has just now been lifted and now we stayed inside because of extreme heat. It has ruined many of the fruit on the trees and the trees itself. We will not be able to travel much this year, just short trip around here. We are content and Praising God from whom al blessings flow. Love you dear ones. Safe travels. Pere & Shirley
